Little-Known Program Provides World-Class Treatment to Vets Diagnosed with Mesothelioma

The West Los Angeles VA Medical Center (WLAVA) provides free health care evaluation for veterans from all over the nation who have been diagnosed with asbestos-related malignant mesothelioma.

Since 1998, the WLAVA has partnered with UCLA Medical School to develop rational strategies to treat mesothelioma. Through this partnership, the same innovative treatments offered at UCLA, one of the world’s leading mesothelioma treatment centers, are also available to veterans at the WLAVA. These treatments include lung-sparing pleurectomy/decortication surgery, cryoablation, immunotherapy, radiation therapy, and a specialized approach to treating sarcomatoid mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is difficult to correctly diagnose. The WLAVA also has expert pathologists available to review slides, tissue and clinical data to confirm or rule out the cancer.

Military veterans account for over one-third of Americans diagnosed with mesothelioma. This little-known program at the WLAVA ensures that world-class treatment, typically reserved for privately insured patients of teaching hospitals, is available to servicemen and women exposed to asbestos while serving their country.

And he’s leading the charge at the PMC laboratory on immunotherapy research and clinical trials. Dr. Cameron’s team at the WLAVA. includes doctors and nurse practitioners who specialize in the areas of pathology, radiation, pulmonary (lung), oncology (cancer) and anesthesia. All have extensive experience with diagnosing and treating malignant pleural mesothelioma.

Elmo Zumwalt Treatment & Research Center

In 2013, the Mesothelioma Center for Excellence at the WLAVA was renamed the Elmo Zumwalt Treatment & Research Center. An Admiral in the United States Navy, Admiral Zumwalt was exposed to asbestos while serving his country on naval ships. He was diagnosed with mesothelioma and died in 2000.

The U.S. Navy, of course, is the most well-known branch of the military associated with asbestos exposure. As many as one-third of all cases of malignant pleural mesothelioma are diagnosed in veterans, particularly Marine and Navy veterans.
